Unfortunately, the holiday season is over. That means the decorations are packed up and shipped back to the garage, basement or attic that they came from and you’re shuffling back to work. As hard as it is to shake the New Year restlessness, it’s better to hit the ground running. Why not start 2018 with some light reading on the importance of critical alignment in your hydraulic systems.
You know the importance of critical alignment in your hydraulic systems, right? It makes sense that when there are mechanisms moving tandemly and working together, that they need to be aligned properly. This relationship is so important, that it’s deemed “critical” alignment.
Unfortunately, when many design engineers are designing a machine, they simply adhere to the tolerances specified by component manufacturers. Not all component manufacturers are created equal and they don’t all have the capability to produce parts to specified tolerances. This might not seem like a big issue, but misalignments can wreak havoc on hydraulic systems. Instead of ignoring these issues, they should be addressed in one of two ways; through machining components with better tolerances, or by using a softer bearing material.
While the first scenario is most ideal, it comes at a price. Machining components with tighter specs is inherently more expensive and might not be cost effective. Alternatively, using a softer material like bronze allows the bearing to wear itself down to match alignment of the surrounding components. This can lead to premature component failure. The decision on which route to take can be overwhelming, especially for those who aren’t experts in the industry. That is why having a trusted hydraulic expert on your team is almost as essential as having strong critical alignment.
